The cover art by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse was adapted from an 1894 illustration for a collection of Omar Khayyam's poetry — a skull wreathed in roses, ancient and somehow perfectly Dead. That image became the most recognized symbol in Grateful Dead history. More copied, more bootlegged, more tattooed than anything else in the catalog. This is the original.
